Binary package hint: pidgin
When the sametime server responds with a login redirection, this is
handled by session_loginRedirect(). However, it appears the "host"
pointer passed to the function can be null, and the function attempts to
do a strcmp() on it:

Digging into meanwhile library, it seems clear the message from the
remote server is actually a NULL redirection host.
Attached patch forces login on the original configured host when a NULL
redirection is provided. Appears to fix the problem for me.
Workaround would be enable "force logins" for

This seems similar to a problem I'm seeing on my Vaio SZ. Kernel is
2.6.27-7-generic.
Randomly on a cold boot it will hard lock. With "splash" removed from
the boot arguments, the last messages onscreen are (this is a hand-
copy):

Behaviour still present on my SZ using 2.6.27-6-generic (has been dist-
upgraded to 8.10 for testing).
Starting on dock gets dock GigE port. Pressing dock button the light on
the dock goes out, and we get 'ACPI: \_SB_.DOCK - undocking' in kernel
messages. No other message. Removing laptop hard loc
Appears to affect me as well (after 8.10->9.04) What details to people
need to resolve this? :)

Fixed according to that bug report. The problem appears to be Compiz no
longer passing Alt-F2 through, and requires it's own gnome compat plugin
loaded.

Distribution upgrade, as noted above, ignores proxy settings from any
source I've tried (apt, env, gnome). This means normal package upgrades
work fine, but you are unable to use the 'Upgrade' button on Update
Manager.
