Please re-open, because this bug still exists in a fully upgraded
version of 8.10 and can be easily replicated. Configure to use Compiz in
the "Appearance" program. Un-install all Compiz related packages through
"Synpatic Package Manager". Reboot and there is no window manager.

to date 8.10 and when connecting using rdesktop (version 1.6.0) the

Also "Radio Tray" suffers from the same problem. Closing an app which
has a corrupted icon restores the icons again (in my case).
For example:
