How are you trying to update the intel driver? Once a version of Ubuntu
is released, Ubuntu generally does not provide video driver updates in
the main repositories. Ubuntu does not support 3rd party updates, such
as from PPA's or the intel site.

Can you elaborate on the USB stick issue? Are you trying to boot the
stick, mount it, or something else?
If you plug in the USB, what is the output of:

I'm seeing it too on Debian with FF/iceweasel 29.0.1
I'm using nvidia proprietary driver and you're using open-source radeon, so I
don't think it's an issue with video driver.
I cannot reproduce the issue on chromium (it works there).
