I am running ubuntu 8.04 on amd64 box. I have the same problem and I
confirmed that reloading the automounter (/etc/init.d/autofs reload)
recovers and I am able to start X applications.

Same problem on my new install. I have had this installed since middle
of April. Tried upstream kernel, checked INIT_HALT=POWEROFF and still
not fix. This is not an nvidia problem in my case as I have intel HD
3000.

Seems I have encountered this bug today. I issued an "apt-get udpate &&
apt-get upgrade" this morning and upon completion, I now get failures as
described above.

Also using ldap authentication with nscd. Confirmed stop service nscd allows
apt-get update and appears to solve the problem.

I have a similar problem. I'm adding what may be more details to aid in
solving. I use LDAP for authentication and I have nscd installed.
Thunderbird has been working without issue until yesterday when I
changed hosts in nsswitch.conf to use ldap as shown below;

I've installed the latest and I now see the problem. If I inserted a dvd it
segfaults or if I have one inserted and start the frontend it segfaults.
