Thank you for readjusted this bug report. I tried to look for the bug
reporting that was built into gnome-app-install, but there wasn't a menu
item with it -- gnome-app-install doesn't really have any menus, now
that I look at it. :P

All users have admin rights (ability to use sudo, etc.) -- basically all
machines are one-user systems in the default manner that a stock Ubuntu
install sets up.
"Sudo apt-get update" does not help, unfortunately. :(

...but I put the old blacklisted lines in:
blacklist r818x

blacklist r8187
...and it still doesn't work. It still freezes on startup. However, if
I take out the realtek wireless card from the laptop physically, the
system starts up fine!

I fixed this on all of my laptop drives my adding the "/dev/sda { apm =
254}" into /etc/hdparm.conf after enabling hdparm in System >
Administration > Services.
Seems to work -- my load count hasn't increased hardly at all since.

You were right -- not only did I need to run it as root, but
"boinc_client" wasn't even what I needed to limit (it was
setiathome-5.12.i686-pc-linux-gnu).
I'll definitely try 1.1-10 whenever I can upgrade to the full version of
