I also now see this behavior on Ubuntu 10.04.3 64-bt. I have had this
machine up since April, 2010 with no issues until about the last 2 weeks
or so.

Workaround: disable winbind authentication in pam-auth-update. There
seems to be a conflict between samba winbind and vsftp's pam modules.

This is fixed for me on update to natty. No proof, but I *think* that
this has to do with the winbind rid backend. When I deleted the tbd
files related to winbind, the problem got noticeably better. I upgraded
to natty and not the problem is gone, and therefore have not tested any
further.

This only happens to me when I have no internet connection. It is still
very annoying though.
