I'm 32 bit with the generic kernel. I don't remember exactly what my drives are, but I can tell you that they are both IDEs - One is a DVD writer, one's just a run-of-the-mill CD reader. Both are stocks from an HP Pavilion a730n (literally the only things I haven't replaced in that computer yet!).
