The dmesg log shows us that the nvidia driver took over 8.7 seconds to

The acx driver does not support NetworkManager. Unfortunately, the acx
driver is also unmaintained and has been removed from Karmic and Lucid
kernels. I suggest using ndiswrapper with the windows driver for this
card. However, ndiswrapper is not supported by Ubuntu either.

It would be helpful to have a trace of the kernel backlight functions.
Please run the following:

I've sent a patch upstream to delete the redundant "Error probing SMB*"
message. The patch may be found at:

sta...@kernel.org, which will drive inclusion for 10.04 LTS.

It's generally frowned upon to use anything other than the official
release kernels. We won't be able to support you if you encounter any
other issues. That said, we have no problem with you running the kernel
as long as you understand the risks associated with it.
