This is still a bug. As Juanca noted, using -S does not solve the issue.
I was trying to build the debian-installer, and the make always failed

My patch to fix the issue has been accepted upstream in the xserver git

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: xorg
This occurred on my initial boot after installing Lucid; however, based
on previous experiences I believe this occurs on every boot. On previous
installs I was able to get around the crash by booting into "single"
mode and then running "start gdm".

In the upstream bug Tejun Heo has offered to work on a solution to this
issue if someone could send him an affected unit.

While we wait to see if there's a better fix, we could disable polling
the drive in Ubuntu by default. What are your thoughts?

@Bryce:
This is an nvidia geforce 9400M. There's not even any upstream support
for it in xserver-xorg-video-nv. It falls back to vesa. So this is
either an xserver-xorg-video-vesa bug or its an xserver-xorg-core bug I
think.

The bug for upstream support for the nv driver can be found at

is only tangential to this bug.

This bug appears to be triggered by the absence of an xorg.conf file.
Normally I don't have an xorg.conf file, so I was seeing the freeze.
However, I do not see a hang whenever I have an xorg.conf file with:
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "NoTrapSignals" "true"
EndSection

resume from suspend failure [Lu
I just tried a new install of Lucid and resume almost started to work
perfectly again with the nvidia drivers. There's a regression in pm-
utils that forces me to manually switch vts to get X back, but the patch
from https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25488 fixes it.
