I've found where the problem lies. The problem is caused due to the
fact that the tar program reports error when both a directory and its
files/subdirs are provided in the list of files to be extracted.

Yes happens every time on Ubuntu 15.04 with all updates applied.
How I open the application doesn't seem to matter, as long as the
application is not locked to launcher. For example, I can open the trash
with "Super+T" or I can open the calculator by tapping super key and
typing the name. Neither
Do not understand the problem & how to rectify it. Help would be
welcome.
