I was unable to confirm that a hang is caused by the scan disk feature
using a fresh install of Jaunty in VirtualBox. When the disk scan ran
it indicated that it was running and gave an option to escape the scan.

I did get some additional data since I had firefox running from a cmd
line:

Can you clarify what key you mean when you talk about the Num Lock key?
There is no key marked "Num Lock" on the Macbook Pro keyboard... Are you
using F6? Did you use the Fn key in combination with F6?
