Well, my experience is that if you wait long enough (tens of minutes)
firefox will eventually be responsive again. Of course, it's completely
unsatisfactory to have to wait tens of minutes after starting a browser
for it to be useful.

OK. Just rebuilt it on Karmic final and yay -- builds with the mozjs
that's in xulrunner.
But it still doesn't do anything except render all urls as direct://.
strace of the "proxy" tool shows no evidence that it actually looks for
any proxy configuration in the env, files, gconf, etc.

I got past it with --ignore-depends=kmod. Array is rebuilding right
now. We'll know in a couple of hours when the backups start whether the
kernel complains again or not. I will update then.

Running it with gdb yeilds:
