The Ogre3D 1.8.1 plugins are in the wrong directory. They should either
be in OGRE-1.8 or OGRE-1.8.1 but not in OGRE-1.8.0, this causes problems
when compiling freeOrion and OpenMW. The workaround at this moment is to
"sudo ln -sf OGRE-1.8.0 OGRE-1.8.1" and rebuild or add klud

There is likely something else going on.

What version of gstreamer? You'll likely have to install the "ugly"
package to get the plugin.
You can test directly by using the wildmidi player to play back your
midi. If it works for you, then the fault exists with Gstreamer or
totem/rythembox.

OSS isn't installed in Ubuntu, ALSA is. There are wrappers that emulate
OSS behaviour but are not installed by default.
Setting "drivers=oss" isn't really an option. Can you suggest another
alternative?
