I upgraded from dapper to edgy. The files in the directory
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/ in the sys filesystem are not available
any more. It only contains a single file 'crash_notes'.
$ ls /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/
crash_no
It seems that my problem and the problem of xandl12 are not related.
xandl12 his problem was that the 'p4-clockmod module' is not loaded
automatically when the system starts.
In my case it tries to load the speedstep_centrino module (ok) but it
fails.
# sudo modprobe speedstep-centrino
FATAL: Er
the bug only occurs in the -386 kernel. I changed to the -generic kernel
and it works fine now.

I tried to enable the second core after a resume but the file
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/online is missing. The file cpu1/online
exists:
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/online

I tried the LiveCD and suspend works fine now. Wakeup/sleep performance
seems to be improved too.

This is a problem in the mediadirect installer. It overwrites the hard
disk without warning. Dell should provide a way to disable this button
or change the behaviour of the installer.
I doubt this should be fixed in Ubuntu but agree this is a problem.

What kernel are you running (uname -a) ?
If does not end on -generic, you shoul reboot and choose the -generic
kernel flavour. speedstep-centrino works fine in that kernel. If it's
not available in grub:
apt-get install linux-image-generic
