Micah: you are correct. I checked the plugins for firefox, there were
two versions of the flash player, the newer version, 10.0r45 works
correctly, disabling the older version does it. Thanks for your help.

Micah: I went to the /home/bob/.mozilla/plugins file, found
flashplayer.so and renamed it (I didn't remove it entirely). Restarted
firefox, still no sound when trying youtube. I am new to this stuff,
and am not sure exactly where to find all the above files, what they do
exactly and how to modif
I updated the flash player. Used 'apt-get', seems to work fine now.
The other audio stuff worked fine prior to (and after) the update.
Apparently you need the latest version of the flash player. Hope

Setting drive device/queue_depth to 31 from 32 resolved an issue whereby
I had numerous zpool and ATA errors but only under high load (zpool
scrub) or when trimming the drives. Was able to reduce incidence by
setting to libata.force=noncqtrim, and resolve with libata.force=no
