Seems a regression in 2.6.22 of the problem reported in bug 104325.
This problem was not present in (near-)current dev-branch kernels prior to
Gutsy release.

I'm concerned that my /etc/network/interfaces file may be the problem.
My initial (Feisty) bug report and the related backport fix were with
respect to an unmodified network/interfaces file. My modified file, used
with Gutsy (2.6.22-14-gen
Hardy Alpha2, booted from CD (and using the supplied network/interfaces
file), shuts down the Sky2 GbE effectively. No problem.

On shutdown, eth1 (PHY and/or MAC) is left in a state which hangs a
connected Ethernet switch. Ie the connected switch cannot pass traffic
via other interfaces. This condition is cleared (only?) by a reboot or
by dropping +5Vsb. Several switches but no other OSs were tried.
