Thanks for the advice to apt-get remove network-manager and network-
manager-gnome. Unfortunately, that didn't work. I still have quite a
few unmet dependencies:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
network-manager: Depends: libc6 (>= 2.6-1) but 2.5-0ubuntu14 is installed.
When I try to install the test package, I get this error:

Preparing to replace network-manager 0.6.4-6ubuntu7 (using

oint me to some documentation that explains the
hex dumps.
Thanks again,

I don't think this is a duplicate of 418781. That has to do with
encrypted swap volumes. This has more to do with regressions in ubuntu
9.10's handling of luks volumes at boot time. I'll add my problem to
the mix:
If a luks volume is due for a fsck, ubuntu 9.10 will launch gnome

@#11 - I also have to set second display to Twinview:Clone. That never
works on the first attempt, but works on the second attempt. Once
second display is cloned, I can change to "Right Of". I am not able to
use the workaround described in #20.

I am also experiencing the original poster's problem. I can tell why
the problem starts or stops, but it does happen frequently.
