I think there's more than one issue here.
The ConsoleKit interaction problem is an error in the default
/etc/dbus-1/system.d/ConsoleKit.conf since ConsoleKit 0.2.10 (see
http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=ConsoleKit.git;a=commitdiff;h=f0fb2d1cfd0f0ea3ad922175e895a9e751498a03
for fix).
However I fin
...and it appears that the latter bug is a compiz problem. When I
switch window managers to metacity the screensaver works fine.
In any case, this is not a bug in gnome-screensaver.

It seems I was wrong - the "bolding" doesn't appear on the "s" with the
legacy filter on, but continues to appear on other characters like "2",
even without subpixel rendering on. (Turning antialias off or using a
bitmap font instead of Vera solves this problem, but looks awful and
defeats the pur

For me, emacs displays, but the text in the window becomes garbled while
scrolling or i-searching. Mucking with X resources only makes it not
display at all sometimes.
Meanwhile it works fine in metacity, so it's definitely a compiz
problem.

.Xresources and running xrdb -merge .Xresources seems to fix the

libsnmp-base is installed by default (required by hplip, which ubuntu-
desktop recommends) and depends on gawk. But the base system already
has an awk implementation (mawk) and nowhere in this package is gawk
specifically required - only generic "awk" is ever used. (Actually
I can confirm the same behavior as quiritius, although since it doesn't
involve user switching it may not be the same as the original bug.
Could there be some weird interaction with plymouth?
