I looked in /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log. It was complaining about a nvidia driver it wanted to remove but couldn't because the pacakge was on a removal-blacklist. I just forced it away manually with apt-get remove and was able to continue. Sorry, this had blocked me for a while. Nothing like
