NetCDF is not built with parallel support, because this breaks all
reverse dependencies that require the serial behavior.
NetCDF upstream doesn't support building both a serial and parallel
version of the library, and until they do a parallel netcdf library will
not be included in the Debian packa

It turned out that I had GEM_HOME and GEM_PATH still set from a setup on
another machine, which caused ruby the search the wrong path. After
getting rid of those, everything works as expected.

The mapnik::freetype_engine issue should be fixed with Mapnik 3.0.17 and
the python-mapnik package that was rebuilt with it. It should be synced
into Ubuntu for inclusion in the next LTS.
Simple make sure you don't have any old GEM_HOME or GEM_PATH variables hanging
around, for example, run

Please note that with SSL enabled in the Debian package, NRPE from EPEL
for RHEL/CentOS 5 (and 6 IIRC) remains incompatible because the dh key
size is too small. I think this is caused by changes in OpenSSL 1.1.0,
