I got the same problem trying to add a 12.4 distribution to a working 9.10
setup (eventually to phase things out).
I end up hand editing the grub.cfg file after running update-grub.
This is a nuisance as the machine is in basement some 500km away and I have to
call someone to change the default

I'm having a similar issue. At some point firefox seems to start
segfaulting at startup. I'm running gutsy on an amd64, with gmail
manager, nspluginwrapper for flash and a few other extensions.

That patch isn't going to fly. MODULE_PARM was deprecated in 2003 and
marked obsolete in 2004.
Eduard just uploaded a new release to Debian unstable.

According to modem/README.Debian, the speaker does not work (and is
unsupported) when the package is built with ALSA support (which appears
to be the case, judging from your buildlog posted in bug 53014).
For speaker support, use the proprietary binaries. Remove
SUPPORT_ALSA=1 from debian/rules,
