If I hit the Activities button, all open applications are hidden. There
is no way to get the applications to display again. The application I
select is started, and shows up on the vertical bar in the left with an
orange dot by it.

Thanks for you help. The gsettings showed that there some bindings
involving "super". I tried those an they all worked. I tried
"Activities" again and it worked.
I did remove some packages after I noticed the problem. I've attached
that history in case it helps someone else with this issu

After upgrading from 13.10 to 14.04, polkitd uses 60+% CPU and system is
VERY sluggish. Killing polkitd "fixes" the problem. This only happens at
boot. I've left the machine idle for 10 minutes, and still polkitd and
dbus-daemon are taking lots of CPU.

I was able to view a pdf to load in ViewPdf, which seems to use poppler.
The same doc in evince comes up with mostly blank pages.
