No, it has not been fixed. I just downloaded ubuntu-8.04-desktop-i386.iso
and booted it as a live CD, and it's still looping.
If anything, the problem has gotten worse: with alpha 4, the desktop background

I tried the 8.04 release CD (ubuntu-8.04-desktop-i386.iso) and the

I'd like to add that in 8.04, the screen no longer automatically reverts
to its default resolution when you don't confirm the new resolution selection
within a short timeout period. This makes the problem harder to recover

Seriously? Here's one way:
Boot the 8.04 live CD
Open a terminal window
Enter the commands

sudo hostname foo
sudo id
Note how the former "sudo id" command succeeds but the latter one fails with

A minor clarification to the above... the exact error message issued

Bug #138084 is solved, but bug #188660 is not, so I still need to use
"safe graphics mode".

I tried, but without much luck. "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop" didn't stop gdm,
as you suspected. I also tried killing the gdm process (or processes, as

That worked. I booted the live CD with the default settings (no "safe graphics
mode"),
let it run through the countdown - black screen - countdown loop a couple of
times,
and then aborted the countdown by choosing

Trying the 8.04 live CD, it is still the case that the network does not work
after
configuring the WEP key using network-admin, even though many details of
the user interface and program behavior have changed since I originally
reported this as bug 67152. I am still using the same hardware.
