Granted I am new to Ubuntu and Linux but this had been driving me crazy.
The sound works; the Volume Control preferences show the correct Intel
ICH5 (Alsa mixer) default card; but for no apparent reason, system sound
preferences default to usb device ox46d:ox8b2, even when the volume
control prefer
just learned that in addition to Audacity not working when it boots as
"usb" the sound on flash doesn't work either. If it boots as "intel" I
can watch and listen to youtube for instance, but when it boots as "usb"
I can see but not hear the video.

Someone in the forums gave me a solution that seems to work:
Locate the module names of your sound cards with:
less /proc/asound/modules
mine was:
0 snd_emu10k1
1 snd_ice1712
In /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base replace:
install sound-slot-0 modprobe snd-card-0
install sound-slot-1 modprobe snd-card-
Someone in the forums shared this with me and it seems to fix the
problem:
Locate the module names of your sound cards with:
less /proc/asound/modules
mine was:
0 snd_emu10k1
1 snd_ice1712
In /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base replace:
install sound-slot-0 modprobe snd-card-0
install sound-slot-1 modp
Never mindI tried this and it worked only the first couple of times;
by the fourth boot, I still got the wrong sound card; AGAIN!

As you can see from the attachment, this bootup gave me the usb sound
card at 0, despite the modprob set to boot intel at 0.
The sound card switches at every boot and no amount of tinkering seems
to give the one I need.

I know how frustrating this is but I finally fixed
mine. I was misinterpreting the Comprehensive Sound
Card instructions. Here's how I fixed mine. I hope
it helps fix yours.
1. First, open Applications, System Tools, Terminal.
At the prompt type: cat /proc/asound/modules

It's happening again, as I write this. I received notification of an
update and the processor is chugging at 100 percent. Here's the output

I removed beagle with synaptic and within moments, there was a software
update. For the first time, the CPU usage did not spike. I think you've
pinpointed the issue. If this changes, I'll let you know. Thanks for
your help. I'll keep you informed.

The next time it shows 100 percent, I will attach another output.
However, your comments are exactly why I filed this bug reportnamely
there is NOTHING running that constitutes 100 percent of cpu
resources.I, too, check the system resources and see nothing taking
anywhere near 100 percent
I experience hang when trying to open software center. I can only add
one package at a time, if that. It takes inordinate amount of time to
open in the first place.
