The ptoblem is actually with the tab control of GTK, so it shows up in
Gedit, Pidgin, Nautilus and several others. Firefox doesn't exhibit it,
I believe because they don't contain controls in the tab panels, but
merely use the tabs as a signal to switch by other means.

I have the same symptoms on a Dell M1330 with a 1280x800 screen and an
Nvidia 8400GM using proprietary drivers . I set the resolution once
logged in, the screen's native.
When gdm/X starts I see a cropped Nvidia logo, as though zoomed in, then
a large login box and mouse pointer aslo as if zoomed
Commenting the line "virtual 1920 1440" and adding "1280x800" to the
list of modes has resolved this problem for me.

I've just upgraded to this kernel, and I don't believe it's fixed the
issue. Here are the details, following a dist-upgrade with that PPA:
Reboot - GDM login screen displays, login bongos play
Press return, to select default user - Screen blanks, a few coloured blocks
appear briefly, GDM reappear

I had the same problem following an in-place upgrade from Zesty+Unity to
Artful. With the possible exception that my mouse pointer didn't even
change to "the arrow, tempting you" when hovering over the window
border.
I did an apt upgrade, an apt uninstall of *unity*, and a reboot. I can

You do have that spacing, It's the space between the edges of the panes
the toolbar, the status bar and the left/right window decorations. I've
marked it with red dimension arrows. I'm using Maverick/Ambience but the
same border was apparent in Lucid. The theme doesnt affect this, the

Prior to install Wily Werewolf I could use external displays - including
an Apple Cinema 27 (mini DisplayPort) and various projectors (Mini-DP to
VGA). Since installing Wily external displays show corrupted visuals.
For instance right now, when I plug in an Apple Cinema 27 th
I don't still have the old kernel. However if I boot the laptop with an
Ubuntu 15.04 Desktop amd64 USB stick then both the Apple Cinema 27 and
the Panasonic television are detected and display a stable picture.
