My live CD is doing the same thing except that the GUI has not stopped.
I am using an Nvidia card though (Nvidia Geforce 6600 w/ 512 MB).
I can close the window that hangs at 53%, and I can also stop the
installation. Running ubiquity in the terminal has no different effect.

This error is happening again in Gutsy Gibson Alpha 5. Restarting
doesn't fix the bug.

I have the same problem on a Dell Optiplex 170L. I was putting together
this computer for a friend of mine who does not have a computer at all.
Using the Ubuntu 7.10 Intel x86 live CD, I ended up booting the live CD
in Safe Graphics Mode. After installation, I restarted and found that it
did not de
After all of the above, I restarted one more time, and it works fine.
But it's still to question, Ubuntu did not detect my graphics card using
just the installer. It even enabled compiz-fusion which means that
hardware acceleration worked. Hopefully, this can help you fix your
problems as well.

Ubuntu does find an audio card on my system, but I cannot get any sound
from my internal speakers. What is odd is that if I put my headphones in
the headphone jack, I can hear sound through the headphones. I can also
use my internal microphone, but the microphone jack does not
