Also, I do have an effective work-around in going with the previous

Keiron,
Are you getting this with an installed 10.04 or are you just booting
in live-cd mode? I'm just wondering if it's possible to test without
having to reinstall my whole system (I'm on an older SSD and want to
minimize full reinstalls unless absolutely necessary).

OK, so it seems that it's not "3d" that's causing the issue. Two things
then:
1. the 2D launcher is ultra-slow under the 5 intel driver.
2. when I select to start the "Netbook 2d launcher" when I login via
the graphical login screen, it puts up a semi GNOME desktop instead of
just launchin
I also get the "Ubuntu logo (with dots)" during the boot. To me, it
looks like the Ubuntu Logo is lower resolution than the normal XGA.

By the way, it appears that the "3d" netbook launcher I mention above

I also tried 2.6.32-22 and that shows the same issue as 2.6.32-21.

At some point between 2010 and today (probably in the 10.10 timeframe,
but I'm not 100% sure), the kernels started working for me. I'm running
the most recent version of 11.10 with no problems.
I, personally, am unsubscribing from this bug and there is no reason to
keep it open on my account.

This happens to me as well on 15.10 with the latest updates:
Linux 4.2.0-30-generic #35-Ubuntu SMP
Compiz 0.9.12.2+15.10.2015-0ubuntu1
Unity 7.3.3+15.10.2015-0ubuntu1
Hitting "alt-enter" gets me back as a work-around when clicking fails,
but this has been a problem for a few versions of Ubuntu.
