I think the same happened to me. Nautilus hangs, one thread uses max. cpu, and I can only see the blank directory, no icons displayed. I hope this GDB backtrace helps. I started nautilus from gdb, reproduced the error and stopped natilus with Ctrl+C two times. (gdb) r Starting program: /usr/bin/
