Once the job data has been sent to the printer it's outside the cups
control and the job can't be canceled from cups, but it can be canceled
from the printer.

If you want the printer to print in true black you can select
(300/600/1200dpi) Grayscale, Black cartridge.
The easiest way to do this is to to run hp-toolbox, click the printer,
then click print settings, under "Quality' select the setting you'd
like.
To run hp-toolbox in ubuntu you may need to

instead of using aptitude. This will be included in the next release of
HPLIP.

You don't need to run install.py after HPLIP is installed. The 2.8.7
version of HPLIP is the Ubuntu pre-installed version of HPLIP.
Till-is there some reason install.py is being installed with HPLIP? It
can probably be removed. HPLIP does not install the install.py during

I have confirmed that both the Ubuntu printer manager and the hp-systray
prompt for "Out of Paper" when there is an out of paper condition. It
does however take a min or so to pop.

The HP DeskJet 3320 is supported with HPLIP 0.9.7 which is included
with ubuntu. I have verified that it was included with the HPIJS 1.3
release (which was a long time ago).
Also keep in mind that HPLIP 0.9.7 is terribly old...*nudge*

If you are using the HP backend the uri should be hp:// not the usb://. In
theory if you delete the printer and re-add it with the hp backend (assuming
that hplip is running) the printer should print.

Are you still having a problem with this? If the ink levels works then
the cart align shouldn't give any printer communication errors. also try
running hp-info and post the output.

Check the settings on the CUPS queue for this printer,
could be set to Duplex there.
Is there a front panel on this printer? If so, that is another place
to check.
Either way it sounds like cups or the printer is overriding the lpr
