polygon, is there a corresponding blue triangle next to the app that
issues the request? Would it be to disruptive to move that triangle on
screen even when the launcher is hidden? I think that would show a clear
correlation.

I just tested the latest daily, if the user name contains upper case letters

The issue is still present in the latest daily iso.
But when disabling modsetting and all ACPI the system actually runs stable. I
still haven't tried disabling any of them individually.
Hope this helps. I can't install the main line kernel as i haven't been
able to install the system because of

If you are still having this issue, then please try to delete the
xorg.conf, it seams that it has settings for the propritery Nvidia
drivers. So if you are not using thows then you should remove it. If you
have updated to Ubuntu 9.10 or 10.04 the xorg.conf is no longer needed.

When i say "running in the background" I mean that I started the installation
in a gnome terminal window. More specifically I was installing the missing lang
packs for danish.
I don't remember if I opened software center before or after starting the
install but maybe it has some thing to say.

To me it looks like the installation continues with out waiting for the
password to be entered.

Removing the close button might be some thing you would be able to get
threw even though the freeze has ocured. But if the issue has been fixed
i guess it's better to let it stay as is.
