I've found System->Preferences->Main Menu. It looks like synaptic and a
number of other tools are disabled. If I click on them to reenable them,
the checkbox goes on briefly before being switched off again, with no
other feedback to me.

system' privilege granted in users-admin. This account was originally
created pre-warty, which I don't think had this option. Until a recent
update, this account was running fine.

The behavior appears to have changed to inserting whitespace, which is
much more acceptable and a non-intrusive price to pay for better
compatibility with email clients.
(Messing with leading > characters is particularly annoying to Python
developers, hence the original bug :) )

The microphone volume in the volume control preferences does not help.
Increasing the microphone boost in alsamixer works, with sound recorder
able to record by voice fine (a bit crackly, but that might just be the
mic). Increasing the microphone volume is unnecessary.
Skype still does not work.
This happened to me just now after a fresh reboot.
Killing gwibber-service and restarting it allowed things to work again.
Perhaps gwibber-service is being run before the network is stable?

Applications. One of these is loading very quickly and on a fresh boot

The Ubuntu login screen is tiled on all displays, not mirrored, making
it nearly impossible to login when using an external monitor if the
laptop screen is not visible.

I don't think this is a dupe of Bug #1723025, which is discussing
behavior when a screen is disabled such as a laptop being closed while
an external monitor is connected. In my case, the laptop screen is not

I just hit this in a 16.04 container, but for reasons I don't understand
installing the core snap first worked around the problem:
