The annoying beeping is fixed in karmic somewhat - it now plays the much
softer Gnome alert bell through the sound system (rather than the
internal speaker) instead.
Still, we need to address that we may be using that too much (like
hitting backspace)

Confirming, this one annoys me personally.
In order to use my docking station I have to plug in my computer and
then hit the "switch displays" button, requiring me to open my laptop.
Once it's no longer outputting to the laptop screen I then close the
laptop, but my monitor output goes dark until

I installed Karmic Alpha 3 and attempted to use Empathy to import my
pidgin accounts. My pidgin IRC was simply broken with no feedback as to
why. I imagine many users will face this
mac_v, I'm pretty sure the "darken screen on lid close" is a default
feature. You're right that this only affects laptop users with external
monitors though.

Binary package hint: gnome-codec-install
Opening an mp3 in a default karmic (alpha 3 is when I tested) will
result in an error message rather than offering to install support for
mp3s. Installing ubuntu-restricted-extras manually makes everything
work as expected.

Universe should be enabled by default, methinks. If the user doesn't
want universe packages we can keep doing what we're doing already -
hiding the universe packages inside App Install.
