For the Human icons the person who creates those icons made one for the
spellcheck toolbar icon. I think what might have happened is the name
for the icon changed but the upstream people responsible for the other
themes did not fix the name of the icon in their theme.

I am not 100% certain but I think that in this case they modified these
for OOo 3.1.x. There have been other libraries in the past that had
modifications but at the time we were still using mostly internal copies
so didn't run into that issue.
I can continue to just use the internal copies if that
I forgot to mention that since Debian has now uploaded OOo 3.1.0 into
unstable they have also moved these packages to unstable as well. So the
potential for other packages to use these regardless of whether we stick
them in main is still there.

That is what OOo is doing... well except in the ia64 case which was
switched to gcj due to some bug in openjdk a few months ago. The failure
documented above was in the compilation of native jars.

Depending on what the cause is there isn't really anything that can be
done to fix it on the Ubuntu side. The controller I noted I saw the
problem on was the controller's fault. It was writing data to the drive
even when not in RAID mode with no regard to what the OS wanted to do

They both have the same on disk fs label 'storage-2'.
When they are connected (USB2) they show up like this under /media

If you uninstall the openoffice.org-gnome package does it work better?
I think without the gvfs support in OOo that it will fall back to using
Gnome gvfs fuse support, this potentially could work better if there are
bugs in OOo gvfs support itself.

It still doesn't work for sftp but that may be related to the truncate
issue, which is fixed in gvfs svn and will be in the next point release
upload.
What I did to test it was change the %U to %F in the .desktop file to
have Gnome use gvfs fuse to for the files.

Do you have the dictionary for your language installed and the document
set to that language?
You can verify by going to "Tools->Options->Language
Settings->Languages" if the language it shows eg "English (USA)" is not
the language you are writing in you need to change it to what you are
writing i
