I am encountering this bug too in oracular, and it is breaking a lot of
my scripts. A workaround is to use /usr/bin/printf instead of the bash
builtin until this is fixed. I do not understand why the Debian folks
reverted the severity from critical to normal as this is breaking
external programs. M

When I manually turned it on a few months ago, the acceleration in
Firefox was working. With new Nvidia drivers or whatever it broke.
I tried the 550, 560 and 565 drivers.

I just double checked the code on all SRUs marked as Fix Released, and
found out that the Caracal UCA was marked as fix-released but it was not
in the code. Comment #42 marked it fix-released by mistake I suppose. It
is NOT YET released.
The fix is still sitting in the proposed pocket:

I think we need to find a bit of time to find or bisect what in between the
versions 10.0 ->10.6 has fixed it. And once we know the change needed start
considering a fix/backport.
I've tagged it to come up in the next team bug sessions, but we are
currently all travelling
