I suspect this is a simple matter of GNOME Shell can't run under XDMCP
because it requires OpenGL which is not longer supported for remote X11

The problem can't be mutter issue 199 because the fix (mutter!431) was
already released in mutter 3.32. And you have mutter 3.36 already in
Ubuntu 20.04. So you already have that fix and I've just confirmed it by

I get same result:
I had to use the generic driver because the NVIDIA one caused the system to
hang on boot. This causes problems in Firefox where the browser shows a
pixilated section of the screen. And Chromium is not stable. How do I monitor
for when NVIDIA will fix this.
