This is indeed a complex problem and it is hard to do anything
reasonable about a missing GTK frontend when debconf is not initiated
from the terminal.
OTOH I think there is an easy fix for GTK+ to always include an "image-
missing" icon at compile time, but apparently I'm not the first one
coming
Unfortunately neither 5.4.0-59.65 nor
unsigned-5.4.0-59-generic_5.4.0-59.65+lp1909005 worked for me.

Thank you gwel! With your message I realized I did not have VirtualBox
installed from the expected source because I installed "virtualbox"
instead of "virtualbox-6.1":
$ apt-cache policy virtualbox
virtualbox:
Installed: 6.1.10-dfsg-1~ubuntu1.20.04.1
Candidate: 6.1.10-dfsg-1~ubuntu1.20.04.1
I can use grub from hirsute, to boot into Ubuntu's grub, then execute
`exit 1` to fallback to the next BootOrder bootentry and boot into
centos8 with Secureboot on.
Meaning the chain of events is Ubuntu's Shim => Ubuntu's grub => exit 1
=> Centos Shim => Centos Grub => complete boot, and bootctl s
kernel 5.4 I don't care, I never had problems with the kernel 5.4.

The new kernel 5.8 (version 5.8.0-34.37), still has the same problem.
This kernel has not been fixed.
