I know this bug was gone for a while, but now there are my findings
which may be a regression:
Test environment:
MAAS version: 2.5.0 (7442-gdf68e30a5-0ubuntu1~18.04.1)
1. Dell G3 3590 laptop with secure boot enabled
Deploying 18.04 from MAAS => Got the same error as bug described.

I can reproduce the bug with nouveau, so it should not be related to the
driver.
There is no need to launch any application to reproduce it, it works
from the desktop. I originally discovered this bug while playing

to suspend when LID is closed and external monitor plugged-in) with XUbuntu
19.04.
Under Xubuntu 19.04, I was using light-locker and was advised to switch to

I have verified ubuntu-image 1.8+19.04ubuntu1 on a disco multipass
instance. Was able to generate bootable ubuntu-cora and classic images
