Really curious if this turns out to be a glibc problem or a beegfs-meta
problem, but we were able to hack together something that circumvents
this problem by forcing beegfs-meta to use an older glibc6 (from
xenial). beegfs-meta is now stable and performing much better!

live session, wondering if that would make a change. Then got the popup
about a crash. As I write this, I haven't looked at the logs yet,

ZFS has https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/issues/326
Which as TL;DR: fallocate is only supported with certain flags, and not really
matches the ZFS COW design. That might explain the slowness, as the fallback is
to write zeros.
