squid-deb-proxy is a apparently a python2 script. I suggest to change
the shebang to /usr/bin/python2 to reflect this. The script crashes for
users who have made python3 the default.

Ah, that was the piece I was missing. Somehow after adding the debian-
installer repo in order to play with d-i creation, either I accidentally
installed cdebconf-udeb, or some other package took it on as a
dependency and I didn't even notice it (for a few years I might add).
I'm honestly surprise
This still affects Eoan.

So multiple ssh subprocesses should not be a huge issue, you could after
all use ControlMaster and stuff to reuse the connection.
That said, it seems reasonable to create a shell script, or a Python
script and execute that on the remote from stdin.
