If you are getting/installing 'proposed' updates for bionic then you
would have received major updates to gnome-shell and mutter recently. So
that's one simple explanation.
Another possibility is that maybe you uninstalled or updated some gnome-
shell extension that was causing the leak.

I have a laptop (Thinkpad T430s) hooked on a dock, then an HDMI monitor
with embedded speakers (Asus MX27AQ) on the dock.
