We had the same issue after updating from Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04 and then 18.04
(the two consecutive updates were applied on the same day).
The filesystem is also XFS. and the setup is with raid10.
The bug does not completely froze the system. Many process still run and were
able to write to disk.

I volunteer to donate or do something for making this feature available
on stable builds.
Loving terminator, recommend it to everyone and really want this search
feature.

Hello Vitaliy, it looks like there's no EFI partition on the disk, but
it was trying to do an EFI install.
