I can confirm the issue on Ubuntu 18.10 (Cosmic) as well. I experienced
that beside locking the screen, seeing the elevated prompt dialog (when
the screen is dimmed) also makes the keyboard layout indicator
disappear. Will be gnome-shell - version 3.30.2-2ubuntu1 available for
cosmic too?

I would be willing to have a look and try to backport the patch I
provided. However, at first I would like to have an explanation from the
ubuntu maintainers why the few-lines-patch I provided, which enables
easy duplex printing for many people (and so safe a lot of paper), has
not been included.

running Ubuntu 18.04 ; followed the instructions removing libtool and
reinstalling and recompiling hplipinstall.
Still at the driver setup I get :

If you use debian or derivatives, you can find the releases in
Heikomat's repo.
If you use ArchLinux or derivitives, you can use AUR
(https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-cx2072x/) to build your own packages,
or you can use my preb
Also, on the last crash, I caught it while it was happening and RX/TX
errors and collisions all went through the roof right before it went
"no-carrier".
