Same problem here reproducible on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. SATA RAID 10 with
XFS filesystem. On each reboot the RAID does a resync. Any operation on
the RAID before the resync is finished causes the process to hang. Might
be also associated with another issue that causes the resync every time
on boot.

Installed a clean bionic install, made sure grub2 binaries are at
version 2.02-2ubuntu8.1, running `sudo update-grub` resulted in printing
out the Warning: message. Then upgraded all grub2 binaries to
2.02-2ubuntu8.2 from bionic-proposed, re-ran the command and confirmed
no message is visible.

I upgraded from 16.04 to 18.04. Same problem with the exception that I
can't switch to the login screen from the lock screen by hitting a key.
I need to press CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to the login screen. Then I can log
in to get back to my session.

I looked into this a little more. Files on the ESP are not written on
every kernel image update. My current understanding is that they are
only written when grub-install is run.
So, yes, I think discard on ESP is not urgent at all, but still nice to
have.
