Very similar situation here with an ASRock N3150M motherboard. This board has
DVI, HDMI and VGA ports, of which I'm using just the DVI. The Xubuntu 18.04
Bionic Beaver i386 DVD fails to bring up the window manager with a GPU hang.

When I boot my new Ubuntu 18.04LTS install on my ASUS flipbook I see the
splash screen as expected. The boot continues and it reaches the point
where you would expect to see the login screen. I see what appears to
be a non-backlighted blank black screen. If I wait until all
Gnome bug was migrated to Gitlab (over at
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/glib/issues/54 ) and the bug number
changed as a result. Currently the close bug (due to being migrated)
seems to result in it being set expired all the time.
