I edited GRUB to boot with nomodeset - this didnt fix the login screen.
Them in a TTY I install nvidia-prime then ran
sudo prime-select intel
After a reboot graphical logon screen (lightdm slick-greeter) and logged

Sorry, but it seems like caches settings, even after Network-manager has been
restarted.
After system reboot it was fine with that option, so I copied my file
configuration back to /etc/NetworkManager/dnsmasq.d, was also fine, but
settings from that file did not take effect.

I just found out that "raw mode", i.e. not requiring VT-x has been
phased out with recent VirtualBox releases. Accordingly, there is no
solution here.
