Updated linux-firmware package manually. Originally Ubuntu 16.04 LTS has
linux-firmware 1.157.17
Would be thankful to know, which firmware version works with which kernel
version.

So it seems that the latest 4.15 kernel in -updates has indeed made a
difference, however, it hasn't really solve the problem. [1] shows the
new issue. It doesn't seem to be driver problem and DHCP is working
fine, provided that otherwise, the machine wouldn't have even gotten to
this point.

Symptoms are the same as #1508146 (but I'm not sure it's the same
cause).
alt+left/right sends me to another tty (terminal shell). Although I'm still
trying to determine if its window manager / keymapper kind of issue or what. I
use ubuntu because I don't typically like to get to this level.

Can you paste the whole log?
It still looks like something about the nic isn't working right. Can
you boot something non-network on that hardware and just confirm
that the nic actually works?
