Mh, ok... I didn't think much about this as that was something possible
using gnome-control-center UI or just dbus-calls.
In fact gnome-contrl-center doesn't require any unlocking operation for
setting the fingerprints, by default.

Alright, I think I'm starting to narrow down the issue. I was able to
use apt-get and install kernels up to linux-image-4.4.0-112-generic.
I'm even able to install the latest, if I uninstall package 'linux-
generic' and manually install linux-image-4.4.0-116-generic, e.g.,

Installed another Xenial and Bionic in vmware to take a deper look.
