In /usr/share/applications/totem.desktop no MimeType key is specified. I
believe this causes several tools to not be able to open video files.
For example, the following commands fail silently:
xdg-open asd.mkv

I tried multiple approaches reported by other people with the same
issue. After not having much success, I ended up installing 17.04,
which went through fine, and then upgraded 17.04 to 17.10.
I then decided to try installing 17.10 cleanly, one last time. FWIW,
that finally went through fine.
