I solved it with this:
sudo apt install nvidia-304-updates
(4.13.0-26-generic; Quadro NVS 290)
That got me to 304.135-0ubuntu0.16.04.2. Latest on
nvidia.com/object/unix.html is 340.137 2017.9.19.
I don't know if either of them have the Meltdown/Spectre fixes.

I usually prefer the Ubuntu packaging to whatever upstream packaging.
But in this case, Ubuntu requires dkms, while upstream doesn't, for a long time
now. There's no module compilation on each kernel upgrade.

For anyone with this laptop... Upgrade to a newer kernel and install the
latest Intel i915 firmware files. When the kernel installs it will warn
you about which files you need. This will get rid of that FIFO underrun
problem. (I chose drm-intel-nightly)
Most importantly adding i915.edp_vswing=2
Same even with the new nvidia drivers. Any solution near ?

* Enter the boot prompts by presseing Esc
* Edit the boot prompt and append nouveau.modeset=0 to the linux boot command
line
== Once installed, you need to do the following:
* Log into the system, assuming it work, if
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.
