Everyone: Try clicking on the cog when entering your password to log in, and change your session from the default Wayland session to an X.org session. This bug looks like it's confined to Wayland but doesn't exist in X.org. Switching to X.org will be a good workaround until the bug is fixed. --

Tried kernel 4.13.10 to no avail. Seems my adapter is slightly different. It does not show up as disk. Instead it is recognized as WLAN device immediately. Error msg is also different.
